What is written between commas is a single step. If you read the instructions “Slip 1 with yarn in front, k5,” you would slip a stitch with the yarn on the front side of the work and then you would take the yarn to the back in order to knit 5. The instructions don’t ask you to knit 5 stitches with the yarn in front.
